Notes on the box...

Everyone's favorite, Butternut Squash!  The skins of these are not edible.  you can peel them with a sturdy vegetable peeler or with a knife.  Butternut is great for soups and sautees, and steaming and things.  It makes a fantastic "pumpkin" pie.  In fact, most of the canned pumpkin that you can buy in the store is actually made of butternut squash.  It should be kept on your counter.

Daikon radish is great for kimchi if you've been considering some home fermentation, also great for quick pickles to add some crunch to sandwiches, and soups.  We also have some recipes for a few new things to try.  Daikon will keep for about forever in a plastic bag in your crisper.  Cut off what you need for a recipe and leave the rest for another time.

each clove of garlic was planted into well fertilized soil by hand with love so that we may offer up big beautiful heads of garlic into your boxes next season!  We planted all that wasn't sold as the "garlic add on" plus a little over 100 pounds of seed that we purchased.  Garlic for all next season!

And we had some fun times, as usual.  And quality control stayed on top of the job.  And after two wonderful seasons, our jewel of an employee, Miranda hit the road for new adventures.  Her hard work and nurturing spirit and genuine care made a lasting impression on the farm and our hearts.  We feel lucky to have had her in our community and we feel lucky to count her as a great friend.  Bon Voyage, Mud Pie!  Come on back anytime!

Full Share

 carrots

head lettuce

green top beets

bagged spinach

salad mix

lacinato kale

hakurei turnips

red onion

cauliflower

acorn squash

Single Share

same as above, but no head lettuce or green top beets

broccoli OR cauliflower

Notes on the box...

About 20% of the Cauliflower seems to have been hit with a frost that discolored it a bit.  If your Cauliflower looks a bit different, it should still taste great, though it might not hold quite as long as the ones that hadn't gotten the frost.  But we had to give the frosted stuff in order to get cauliflower into everyones boxes.  Sorry!  But this will likely be the last cauliflower of the season.

The carrots are mostly bagged baby carrots with a handful of shares getting regular sized topped carrots.  These are true baby carrots, not the whittled down ones you might find at the grocery.  They are wonderful cut in half lengthwise or left whole and roasted.

Hakuri Turnips or Salad Turnips are ones you may remember from the beginning of the season.  They are such a treat!  Remove greens from turnips to store.  The turnips in butter recipe below is so simple and perfectly delicious.  Or you can see the Week 3 blog for this season for a Turnips with White Miso recipe from Deborah Madison.  You can also slice or dice them and add them raw to salads.

Full shares got green top beets this week.  The greens should be removed from the beets for storage.  Greens can be added to or used in place of spinach or kale.

Lacinato Kale is back!  Enjoy its sweetness since it has been touched by a frost!

Like all other winter squash, Acorn Squash should be stored on your counter, adding to your festive fall decor.

Recipes...

[yumprint-recipe id='54']Vegan Red Lentil Stuffed Acorn Squash

Roasted Acorn Squash with Onion, Grapes, and Thyme

Tuscan Kale Salad with Roasted Chickpeas

Farro Beet Salad (with the greens!)

On the farm...

We got a little snow the other day! We woke up and there it was, sitting on the ground!  Then there was a very very thick layer of frost.  The temperatures have been 10 degrees below average for this time of year.  We have been feeling it and so have the veggies.  Things have slowed their growth a little.  We have a planting of broccoli that we are tapping our toes, arms crossed, waiting for it to head up.  We also have some little bitty brussel sprouts that will hopefully size up in the next couple of weeks.  The good news is that the cool weather sweetens up the greens and the carrots.  Yum!

Yes!  We still have Winter Shares available!  Some people have had trouble with the sign up and if you'd like a Winter Share but couldn't get signed up, you can email us directly at turniprock@gmail.com and we will add it to your account.

It's also time to get your early sign up in for 2015!

As returning members can use the coupon code RETURNIP for a discount on your share, if you’d like to!    If you are a dropsite host, you will have a different discount code that will be emailed to you.

Signing up early ensures that you will be charged the 2014 seasons price.  Egg share options are first come first serve and we aren’t expanding our flock!  These sell out every season and we have a long wait list.  Signing up early is the best way to make sure you get eggs.  Also, If you think you can handle the amount of veggies included and you easily went through your half share, please consider a full share!  We LOVE seeing the early sign-ups rolling in!  Please contact us if you have any questions or any trouble with signups.

Notes on the box...

We've been enjoying spinach everyday this week.  It's so versatile, you can throw some in a soup at the very end of cooking, you can add it to lasagna, you can use it as a raw salad green, you can simply steam them down into a silky tender bunch of emerald goodness.  We hope you are enjoying it, too.  If you can't get through it in the week, you can steam it down freeze it in a freezer bag for later use.

Winter Squash can be stored on your counter until you are ready to use them.  The skins of both of these varieties are edible, but it is thinner, so the squash may not keep as long as other varieties.  Slicing and roasting these varieties together makes for a beautiful dish.  Recipes are below.

Always remove the tops for your carrots when storing so they don't become soft and bendy.  Though, if you have soft, bendy carrots and tops, you can use them for soup stock.

Recipes...

Lots of roasted vegetable recipes links this week.  It's oven on weather!

A raw soup recipe for our vegan raw friends...  Our backyard mushroom logs are really popping, so we will be having a quick, cooked version of this soup with canned coconut milk.  Raw Coconut Pak Choi Spicy Soup

On the Farm...

Hey!  It's time to sign up for Winter Shares or, if you'd like to, sign up early for next season!  We put a flier in the box explaining why we really need you to go ahead and sign up for next season if you enjoyed this season.  This will be the online paragraph with the same information:

----------------------------------------------------

The last box of the regular season will be on October 23rd, just 3 weeks away.

If you are enjoying your Turnip Rock Summer CSA, we invite you to join us for 4 more weeks added on to the end of the growing season.

You can sign up for a Winter Share online that will deliver a full size box every Thursday at your usual pick up site from October 30- November 20th (the week before Thanksgiving).

The crops will be cold sweetend greens like lacinato and curly kale, collard greens, spinach, salad mix, brazing mixes, arugula, and head lettuce. Also storage crops like Butternut, Acorn and Pie Pumpkin, brussel sprouts, carrots, onions, beets, cabbage, and daikon radishes among other goodies.

The cost of the Winter Share is $152 for 4 weeks and is a full size box. Many veggies store well into the winter with little extra care.  We have only 40 spots still open. So if you are interested, please sign up soon!  You can sign up by going to your account and adding the Winter Share, or you can simply email us (turniprock@gmail.com) and we will add it to your account for you.

Also, while you are there, we encourage you to reserve your spot for 2015 by going to your account and signing up for next season, with a minimum payment of 1/5th of your total. Egg shares sell out fast and the best way to get one is by signing up early.  We will not be expanding our CSA!

We need your support this fall as we are building an AMAZING cheese share option that no other CSA will have.  There will be very approachable farmstead, raw milk, aged cheese, and super fresh squeaky cheese curds made right here on our farm and going right in your box! We will keep you posted on progress, but we need an infusion of cash to complete our cheese making space to get it up and running in time for next Spring!  Your early sign up and signing up for a Winter share would help greatly!  Please contact us with any questions.

MANY THANKS!  Your farmers, Josh, Rama and Turnip Rockers
